Make your vote count

Not voting is the same as voting for the current ruling party.

DEAR Editor,-

I read with interest the letter from ‘Resigned resident’ of Albersville, bemoaning and confirming how we all feel about paying our rates to the municipalities on the Hibiscus Coast.

We certainly have an area, all over this coast, which is falling so far behind, it is bound never to return to its former glory.

The roads are absolutely disgusting and certainly dangerous for heavy traffic, as well as for vehicles! The verges are mostly overgrown or have been cut with the debris just left there. Towns throughout the Hibiscus Coast are dirty, dilapidated and litter is left strewn everywhere.

There is, unfortunately, a culture that has developed, where one sees with regularity, folk dumping their empty food packets or whatever else out of their vehicle just about anywhere. The ‘creating work for my brother’ attitude is ludicrous because the ‘brothers’ are NOT doing the work! It is so easy and simple to tuck empty containers or packets into a corner of the car to be put into the trash can at home.

Lastly, ‘Resigned resident’, it is not the best solution to ‘withhold our votes’. A vote withheld is as good as a vote for the ‘promises like pie crust’ party currently in control. Rather vote for a party that could make a difference.

On a visit to Cape Town and surrounds early in 2013, I was blown away. Not by the ‘Cape Doctor’ winds, but by the neatness, good repair and general beauty of a clean city. The roads are mostly well-looked after, the verges are clean and cut, and refuse does not lie in a constant flow, like a river of bits and pieces, all along the route.

The DA have proven their worth in the Western Cape and deserve a chance to show what they can do in the rest of SA. Our country is failing itself miserably. Visitors constantly remark about the degradation in South Africa since they last visited, as do visitors to the Hibiscus Coast from upcountry, watching this sad situation worsen in just a year.

Our pleas for ‘jacking up services’ fall onto the deaf ears of the well-fed folk, who seem only to be where they are for self enrichment and not to ‘serve’ their communities.
