DEAR Editor,-
I was driving along Marine Drive near the Creston turn-off on Monday when I came across the most magnificent 2-3m green mamba frantically snaking its way across the road. I slowed down and swerved right to avoid it.
Alas, a man driving a twin-cab behind me deliberately swerved left to run over it. The snake still managed to slither off into the bush, but it is doubtful that it will survive.
I wasn’t brave enough to stop and go looking for a wounded, highly venomous snake, but the incident did leave me with a feeling of sadness.
Doug or Terence Whittle from Pure Venom will confirm that a green mamba is a timid snake and humans are hardly part of its food chain. There is really no need to wilfully kill such a beautiful creature. Hopefully the ‘killer’ will read this letter and think twice if there is a next time.
