DEAR Editor,-
In an effort to help beautify our little town of Sunwich Port, resident Arthur Matthee, took it upon himself to make a lovely little garden at the entrance to Sunwich Port. He did this at his own expense and took the time to paint some tyres to add a little colour.
While there were many who praised his efforts, there were some disgruntled people who could only post negative comments. Sadly, Arthur became thoroughly fed up about the whole issue and removed the garden.
Prior to this, at a residents’ meeting, Stafford Tippett had voiced his displeasure at the garden, comparing it to a graveyard, and said he was planning to build a rockery at the entrance. But even though months have passed, we are yet to see this supposed rockery.
This is not the first time there has been an attempt to beautify the entrance to our town. A number of years ago, I went to the trouble of taking plants from my own garden, dug some flower beds, with strange looks from passers-by, and with the help of some municipal employees, removed all the stones and rubble and put in plants in an attempt to uplift our little town.
But, over time, the municipal workers just mowed the gardens flat, aloes, plants and all, and were just too lazy to attend to the gardens that would have been so beautiful today.
I would like to commend Arthur for his creative efforts and say that we will not give up on this. I would like to invite interested Sunwich Port residents to contact me so that we can get together and find a way to pretty up the town once again. If anyone is willing to donate some plants to this worthwhile project it would be wonderful.
And to Mr Tippett, why don’t you join us. Come and get your hands dirty, bring your rocks and your spade and let’s do this together as a community and turn negatives into positive action.
