DEAR Editor,-
I recently moved from Pretoria to the South Coast and was on my parents’ medical aid my whole life, but everyone has to leave the nest at some point. Looking at medical aid costs, I think companies are insane and no single-income family or any young worker can afford such high fees. So I procrastinated in selecting a new medical aid, which would promise the world but suck money into a black hole.
Unfortunately my appendix never got the memo to stay healthy and I had to be admitted for an emergency laparoscopic appendectomy. I’ve heard horror stories about state hospitals and have seen first hand the nightmares in hospitals in Johannesburg, so understandably I was hesitant to go to the Port Shepstone Regional Hospital. Not that I had a choice, I was in immense pain. I would like to thank and congratulate this hospital on changing my opinion about state hospitals.
Shortly after arrival I was attended to, proving the triage system really works. Doctors were extremely professional and helpful and answered all questions I had and the sisters and nurses of ward 2 are dedicated, passionate, professional, helpful and friendly and made my stay enjoyable. The hospital staff and cleaning crew work hard and they clean regularly. The ward was in a great condition and changed all misconceptions I had about state hospitals.
I’m not saying all state hospitals are in a good condition, but I can honestly say that the Port Shepstone Regional Hospital is amazing and I will continue to use it as my hospital of choice. Not because I have to, but because I want to!
SATISFIED PATIENT
