Painting a sinking ship

Elsewhere, potholes remain, some are presently being 'repaired' for the fourth or fifth time.

DEAR Editor,-

Last year the south end of Commercial Road in Umtentweni, acquired kerb stones and a narrow footpath. My own observations and those of others rather indicated that most of the pedestrians using this road do not use the footpath.

Now the north end of Commercial Road is being equipped with kerb stones and footpaths on both sides of the road. But with the road in such a terrible state, one can only wonder what sparked off this expensive activity. At the south end, outside the JTV Shopping Centre, there are really serious potholes, these are ignored, while money is being poured into laying unnecessary kerb stones and new footpaths.

Elsewhere, potholes remain, some are presently being ‘repaired’ for the fourth or fifth time.

In Caro Road, Southport, the road surface was damaged months ago when a water leak was repaired. Initially the resulting damage was taped off but this has fallen down and now lies at the side of the road. The subsiding hole is some three metres long and one metre wide and is now approaching 30cms (12″) deep.

I reported this damaged and deteriorating area to the road department but was told Ugu plumbers damaged the road and they have to repair it. I was given a telephone number to call but the number is never answered.

Are we facing another five years of this nonsense?
