‘Return to sender’

Trying to pay a fine for parking was an absolute nightmare.

DEAR Editor,-

At the licensing office in Port Shepstone two weeks ago, I parked at the car park on the opposite side, unaware you have to pay for parking. Upon my return I got a parking ticket for R200. So after a tantrum, I relented and paid the ticket by postal order as instructed on the ticket.

Yesterday I got a letter returning my postal order with a message that postal orders are not accepted. I was dumbfounded so I phoned the number of Hibiscus Coast Municipality found on the letter, but the female operator informed me “you have to pay by cash or cheque.”

I informed her that it stated on the ticket ‘payment can be made by cash, cheque or postal order’, but that was met with silence. I was then instructed to phone the toll free number reflected on the ticket, which I did. This being an agent for the town hall, I was again told that I can pay by postal order.

I phoned the municipality back, but again same story “you can pay by cheque or cash”. When I informed the woman to read the ‘small print’ regarding postal order payments, she replied “the postal order thing must not be working”.
