OPINION: ‘Fines for littering might do the trick’

Trash bins at strategic locations, such as taxi ranks, might also encourage individuals to ‘containerise’ trash.

DEAR Editor,-

‘Tweni Resident’ (Letters to the editor, SCH August 31) is right! Something MUST be done about the litter all along the South Coast.

The only litter-pickers appear to be volunteers – and their task is both hopeless and demoralising, because as soon as an area has been ‘picked clean’ it is re-strewn with fresh litter.

A solution that has had visible results in several US states is the imposition of stiff fines for ALL litter bugs – from those dumping entire bags of trash to individuals tossing empty soda cans out of moving vehicles.

Trash bins at strategic locations, such as taxi ranks, might also encourage individuals to ‘containerise’ trash instead of tossing it on the streets.

The latter occurs far too frequently.
