DEAR Editor,-
With reference to the article entitled ‘Vinnie Krishnan is mourned’ (SCH August 23).
Almost 29 years have flown past since I accompanied Vinaithan Krishnan to the Department of Education’s head office in Durban, where he received an award for his outstanding senior certificate examination results.

With distinctions in all subjects, an aggregate of just under 100 percent and second position in the country, he set a record at Port Shepstone Secondary, which, to my knowledge, has not been surpassed or equalled.
I was privileged to be Vinaithan’s English teacher in standard 9 – not that he needed much teaching.
He was an angel of a boy, from a most humble background – a gifted pupil, with grace and impeccable manners, a genuine warmth and a sense of humour.
His bright, beatific smile, which he bestowed on everyone, illuminated lives.
Teachers often follow the progress of their pupils, whether at tertiary institutions or in the world of work, where they pursue careers and dreams.
I was always overjoyed whenever I received news of Vinaithan’s achievements as a medical student and later as a consultant physician in the United Kingdom.
Wherever he practised, he imbued his profession with the sense of a greater humanity.
The emptiness we feel at this moment will ease with the kindness of time.
The Vinaithan we knew and loved would not want us to grieve, but rather to celebrate his life with joy in our hearts.
