DEAR Editor:
Picturesque Club Marina, situated on the banks of the Fafa River, has a population of 250 people.
Their only transport link to the outside world is via the P254 gravel road.

When it rains and when the road is not maintained, residents cannot get to work, take children to school or even complete the mundane chores of weekly shopping.
During the recent floods, emergency response teams struggled to get through to render assistance to many whose homes were submerged by the deluge.
Thankfully there was no loss of life.
The road also serves local farmers and the residents of Ifafa Beach who have two churches along the road.
The solution to this long-standing problem is for Umdoni Municipality and the Department of Transport to upgrade the road to a blacktop or concrete standard.
Having endured this situation for some 30 years it is time for this community to get government assistance to ease their burden.
A similar problem existed for the village of Shayamoya just south of Umzinto.
Umdoni municipality tarred the road and is planning to do so again.
This ratepaying community deserves similar treatment.
I have compiled a petition which will be served on both the municipality and the department, requesting the upgrade as a matter of urgency.
Residents who have not signed the petition can do so at the office in Club Marina, between 9am and noon, or at the office of the Ifafa Beach Caravan Park between 9am and 4pm.
The petition will be available until November 8.
I encourage all members of the Ifafa community to support this initiative and sign the petition.
If we expect to receive the services that we pay for we must make ourselves heard.
