The unfortunate reality that faces them is a rampant buyers’ market for labour, whether skilled, semi-skilled or unskilled.
Slim
The chances of a recent Grade 12 ‘graduate’, irrespective of the quality of his or her pass, being permanently employed in the formal sector is extremely slim.
Employers are currently spoilt for choice, even for ‘entry level’ postings, with multiple applications from desperate work seekers willing to take on jobs for which they are hugely overqualified.
The need to differentiate yourself as a potential employee is thus critical to work seekers. To even get a foot in the door, it is vital that your CV exhibits traits and experiences that make you stand out from the crowd.
Soft skills
Hence any opportunity to build soft skills such as teamwork, and empathy must be taken full advantage of.
Volunteering for community and charity organisations for example must be pursued. Learn as much as possible about the company, its history and ethos, if you are fortunate enough to be called to an interview.
The extent of one’s employability in the challenging work environment currently being experienced depends on a lot more than excellent academic results.
If lucky enough to be placed in formal employment, be cautious, as most companies are rigorously enforcing their probation clauses to ensure they have made the best choice of candidates.
Confidence
Therefore, it is important that right from the outset you exhibit the type of behaviour that instils a sense of confidence in your new employer.
These include:
- Flexibility and adaptability – be willing to assist and learn outside of your rigid job description
- Enhance your soft skills and emotional intelligence – active listening, communication and collaboration
- Creativity – offering novel and innovative solutions
- Continuous learning – show the willingness for ongoing self-improvement and upskilling
The vital ingredient is developing an entire package of skills that make you desirable to your potential employer.
