LOCKDOWN BLOG: You can teach a young dog new tricks – Day 31

So far, she can sit, give paw and lie down. I'm super impressed by her ability to learn quickly.

A month prior to lockdown Mia came into my life.

She was only three months old when she was found wandering the streets of Margate.

Someone tagged me in a Facebook post and, being a soft touch for big ears and sad eyes, I drove to Margate to fetch her the next  day.

Little did I know, a month later, and deep into lockdown that I would spend so much time at home.

But it has meant I have been able to watch her grow.

Well, Mia hasn’t stopped growing… and growing.

I think she might be a mixture of bull terrier and cattle dog. But, who knows!

Someone said to me shortly after I adopted her, “that’s what you get when you rescue a puppy, you don’t know what you are getting.”

Mia, is a fierce and bright four-legged hound, and I adore her.

During lockdown I have been trying to spend 10 minutes or more a day to train her.

So far, she can sit, give paw and lie down.

I’m super impressed by her ability to learn quickly, and she is praised with treats.

Well, since we are all currently watching our rands and cents, she gets her morning breakfast dog pellets as treats.

She appears to love her training time, and thanks to a tunnel lent to me by accredited animal behaviourist Susan Henderson, I have set up a little make-shift obstacle course in the garden.

After a recent morning session with her, I messaged Susan to say Mia is not focused enough.

Susan replied: “The more focus you need the more special the treats must be, try liver!”

She further explained that “it’s a bit like your partner not thanking you for cleaning!”

Yes, she was 100 percent right, dog pellets certainly won’t cut it.
