Has the world changed forever for the worse or will we get through the curse of Covid-19 and emerge, if not vigorously triumphant, then at least still holding our ground in the battlefield of life?
Time will tell, obviously, and hopefully a whole lot of common sense will prevail to get the country (and by extension the South Coast) back into shape so that all its people can benefit.
Schools are opening again and Covid-19 case numbers are rising, so it’s anxious times for all. Golf and fishing are allowed but we still can’t bury our toes in glorious beach sand.
It’ll take more than cents to get our battered economy going again and it’s desperately sad to see people being retrenched and losing hope.
There are a thousand theories out there as to the cause and/or reason for this virus. If there is any truth to these will no doubt be revealed in the fullness of time.
What does need to be addressed, and probably should have been at the very start, was to find every possible way and means to enable people to work, feed their families and keep the economy ticking over.
On a lighter note… I have not been feeling the love from some of our local cruciverbalists, a very impressive word for a fan of crosswords. And I have only myself to blame, or maybe Covid-19. Or maybe the smoking ban. No, it can’t be that, I don’t smoke. No golf for three months – no, not even that.
I must sincerely apologise to them. I know I am in trouble when the south-westerly (SW) blows in my direction. This is my nickname for someone I know and respect greatly who lives in the south and she is always, without fail, first to gently point out any errors.
First we left out a clue in the cryptic. The answer would turn out to be adit, which was something we didn’t do. An edit was in order, of course. Turns out an adit is an entrance to a mineshaft. After that blunder I was tempted to try and find my own escape down a tunnel.
At some point we forgot to update the deadline for entries, a minor issue as we extended grace to those who may have ‘missed it’.
But the biggest and most embarrassing one came last week.
We had the clues correct, checked and rechecked and checked again, lest the SW pick up to more than a zephyr and join in with the cold front from the Cape. Somehow, we inserted the wrong grid to go with those clues.
Oh boy, did we catch it the next day, and for a few days afterwards. “Who’s the ‘bleep’ who does the crossword?” “It’s the highlight of my week, come on.” ”The other news is secondary, it’s the crossword that matters.”
It’s probably not the easiest way to make new friends and keep in touch with others, but it is what it isn’t (in this case) and going forward we will take care to get it right!
