How selfish can one be? Isn’t it an injury to one an injury to all?
How can one test positive for Covid-19 but keep it a secret and carry on with life as normal?
Yet this has been happening.
For nine months we have had a new normal.
The effects of the virus have been everywhere and affected everyone around the world.
There is no excuse for one to say that they are afraid of the stigma of being branded positive.
Even when it comes to the dreaded HIV/Aids virus, there is barely a stigma attached to this anymore – unless you are especially arrogant and self-centered.
A week ago I had to go for a Covid-19 test because someone hid it from my mother that she had tested positive.
My mom fell sick and unfortunately, myself and my ‘mudball’ as well.
The ‘mudball’ is my very busy son Hlelo, aged five, who you may remember from a previous column I have written.
We all had horrible flu symptoms and I knew I could not go to the office feeling like that.
This was not only because I did not want to infect my colleagues with whatever germ I had, but I also needed to get better and feel better for my own health and safety.
We were also particularly concerned as my gogo, who is 76 years old, lives with us.
Shortly after feeling seriously under the weather, we went to get tested and then two days later received our results.
I’ve never been so relieved and happy to have failed a test: I was negative.
All this has made me wonder why we all can’t think about putting others first.
Why can’t we all be a little considerate and caring?
I have heard from people I know that they have come across people with Covid-19 people at the pharmacy going to buy medication.
That’s just one example.
Some people test positive and yet still go out in the public with no concerns or care about the possibility of infecting others.
What really gets me is that they don’t even deny they are positive.
Can we please all be a little considerate and humane and think about the next person at the till point or at the pharmacy queue, or wherever we are standing.
By now we should all be aware what is happening and we should all be protecting one another.
The President mentioned that wearing a mask is not a personal choice but it also helps to protect others.
It’s time to stop being being selfish and look out for each other.
