It looks like 2021 is going to be just as tough as 2020 with new uncertainties plaguing our lives.
How do we remain positive?
It is easier said than done – on a daily basis we are bombarded with news of rising Covid-19 infections and deaths.
By now, many have lost family members to the virus or know of others whose loved ones have died.
On the other hand, if the disease hasn’t affected you directly, there is fear and anxiousness of being infected or someone close to you being infected.
It’s all round doom and gloom.
How do we pick ourselves up and continue with our lives when all are mentally drained?
One step at a time – let’s control the things we can as individuals.
Many people are glued to their TVs or via other media outlets to find out the latest facts and figures about the pandemic.
I am no stranger to that, I feel that if I am well informed, I will have a better chance of being aware and in turn being safe.
That’s okay, but control how much of the detail you take in, you don’t want information overload where you are constantly thinking of the ‘what-ifs and what-nots’.
Another way to take back control of fear, if you are not coping, is to talk about it among your family members.
I do, and it helps.
However, don’t take this advice to heart, as I am not a therapist.
If you feel you need professional help, by all means get it, because once again it’s you in control of the situation.
We are also advised to stay at home if not going to work, grocery shopping, or seeking medical help.
Obviously, it will be as boring as hell, especially for the children around.
There’s only so much TV one can watch, but here’s another opportunity to control what you do.
It can be time to start a new hobby or dust off that old interest you have been meaning to get back to.
A hobby is as good as exercise as it keeps you focused and takes your mind of unnecessary thinking.
My go-to is my mini gym at home, it not only clears my mind but keeps me fit.
I try to get in an an hour a day, either on the treadmill or Billy Blanks shouting in my ear to do one more set of leg raises.
This is something that is working for me, as during that hour I am free from everything – it becomes my time, my space.
