Casper Jooste of PATS Foundation (poverty alleviation through support – NPO 134-331 trading as National Cancer Help!) is registered with the department of social development to do cancer education and assist individuals from poor communities afflicted by the disease on a physiological and needs level.

Casper says the foundation approaches business and malls/shopping centres for permission to set up cancer information outreaches.
“We don’t beg for money or ask but include a sealed tin on the tables for a freewill offering towards our cause. We are small but effective and make a big difference in the lives of people suffering from cancer,” he said.
He says, that as an organisation, the team brings education and motivation to the public, men and women, from Amanzimtoti to Margate.
“We advise men and women to go for an annual check-ups. We educate more than 600 people per week, face-to-face, advising them where, when and how to go for check-ups.”

Meanwhile, schools are back in action, this is the last paper for February, and as I type this it is day 333 of lockdown.
A lockdown that we were told was going to last until April 16 in 2020. How things changed!

Talk of catch ups on zoom are perpetually put on hold.
Group chats are no longer pinging all night long.
It’s not you.

We are tired of saying ‘I miss you’ and ‘I can’t wait for this to end’.
So we mostly say nothing, put our heads down and get through each day.
You’re not imagining it.
This is a state of being like no other we have ever known because we are all going through it together but so very far apart…”
