OPINION: ‘TV advert is insensitive, says reader’

What about the huge number of people in South Africa living below the poverty line?

DEAR Editor;

Am I the only person who finds the recent advertisements for dishwashing powder/liquid insensitive and uncalled for?

‘Save water for the future generations – use a dishwasher’ and ‘your plates and dishes are not sanitised unless they are washed in a dishwasher’.

I have paraphrased the wording but that is the general gist.

What about the huge number of people in South Africa living below the poverty line?

They hardly have enough to buy food and water to consume, let alone invest in a dishwasher for their shack.

So, these unfortunate people now have another guilt trip to add to all the others.

They’re supposedly putting their families at risk by not ‘sanitising’ the dishes.

The ’56 litres wasted’ mentioned over and over again are a lot more than many whole families have available for their daily needs.

And while I’m on the subject of TV advertising – DStv’s advert for The Bachelorette, with the opening shot being of contestants happily releasing so-called Chinese lanterns.

These are a total fire hazard and dangerous to wildlife.

Locally, we had one land in our parking area, narrowly missing our vehicle.

Others have landed on verandahs destroying furnishings and if they’re let off near the coast could end up in the ocean – something else to pollute the sea with.

They’re also mistaken for distress signals from out at sea.

Inland can you imagine the fire one could start in an inaccessible mountain region.

Come on guys – re-think your adverts.
