DEAR Editor;
It is ironic that on the day protests over water supply and service delivery turned violent from Umzumbe to Izingolweni, and the N2 national road, the main artery for all business and travel in the Ugu District, had to be closed, the motion put before the Ray Nkonyeni Municipality council by the Democratic Alliance in a move to initiate solutions to the water issue, was rejected on the grounds that Ugu and Cogta is sorting out the problem.
This head in the sand attitude is akin to rearranging deckchairs on the Titanic.
The motion put before the council by DA councillors Alan Bosch and George Henderson proposed the following:
1. Recommendation:
That the RNM Council resolve to instruct its councillor delegation deployed to the UGU council to move, within that council that:
1. the Ugu District Municipality applies to the MEC of Cogta to be placed under administration in accordance with the provisions of section 139 and,
2. the bulk water supply within Ugu be transferred to Umgeni Water for management.
The motion was voted on after debate in the virtual council meeting and was defeated by 32 votes to 16 with two abstentions.
The DA fully supported the motion. It was concerning that many other small opposition parties failed to either debate or vote in support of the motion.
This is clear evidence of the ANC RNM councillors voting en bloc and once again putting the interests of the ANC ahead of the people they were elected to represent and have a mandate to serve.
The DA will continue to fight for the residents’ rights to water under the South African constitution.
Cry the beloved country!
DA RNM councillor Alan Bosch
DA RNM councillor George Henderson
