DEAR Editor;
I am originally from the Lower South Coast, Gamalakhe township in particular. However, I left to study in Durban in 2000 and after my studies I was employed and stayed in Durban on a permanent basis.
Having said so, my family is still based in Gamalakhe. I visit them whenever an opportunity arises. My last visit was last Sunday. This brings me to the crux of the matter.
It saddens and angers me to see how the ANC led local government, particularly its Ugu water division, is dismally failing people of that region.
In Gamalakhe, and I hear in other areas too, people go without water for days and weeks on end yet water is one of the most essential basic services. This is a blatant betrayal of people’s right to basic services.
At home in Gamalakhe’s Mamkobozi Road, there is a municipal pipe that over the years has been leaking millions of litres of clean water on the street.
This has been going on for so long that the road infrastructure has collapsed at the bottom end of this street due to erosion. Right outside our gate, the water has eroded a significant portion of the road (see attached picture).
We have been reporting this for years now to the local councillor. He has on several occasions brought the service men from Ugu but not once have they made any meaningful attempts to fix the problem. They always promise to return to finish the job. This has been going on for years now.
