What does one do in the face of adversity? ‘Life is not fair’ or ‘When life gives you lemons, make lemonade’ are some of the most common phrases we hear when our backs are against the wall, or when things seem to not be going our way.
The sad truth about life is that in most cases it is viewed in black and white, with a very small grey area.
Sometimes, we find ourselves staring into the face of adversity, not knowing what to do.

Another sad reality of life is that external, uncontrollable forces may lead to the possibility of one losing almost every single thing that they have worked for or achieved.
What do you do in this case, a case where you find yourself afflicted by a situation, or a series of unfortunate life events that leave you on the verge of losing it all?
Although I cannot say I am a child anymore, I am still quite young and I continue to embark on the path of coming into myself as a full grown independent man. With age, comes knowledge.
I have come to understand that knowledge is not only acquired through a book, or interaction with those who have made the journey before you, but it is also acquired through experience.
I have come to understand that experience is the best teacher, but can also be one’s biggest downfall.
You see, one of the hardest pills to swallow when it comes to adversity is the ‘accountability pill’ prescribed and provided for you by Dr. Life.
Life is not selective in the lessons it teaches, bending one’s resilience to the point of self doubt, stress and anxiety.
Not being able to control certain outcomes of life often leaves us on the brink of mental struggles that we think we are beyond our abilities to cope with, or we even think we can never come back from them.
In the past few months I have been dealt with so many challenges and obstacles that I can only deal with by putting my head down and staying focused on what I can influence and change, and hoping that all that I have done, will translate into favourable decisions for me, when the decisions that are beyond my control are made.
It’s safe to say that in some aspects I have had success and in others not so much. The ‘not so much’ part is due to aforementioned external factors that are beyond my control.
True resilience lies in not bending when the pressure is applied.
Whether that pressure comes in the form of having to wait to hear the outcome of a decision that may change your life for better or for worse, or whether it’s time to step up to play your role as captain of your destiny.
It is in this light that I believe that no matter your race, ethnicity or even your religion, when things get to hard for us to face alone, we all look to a higher power for help. And mine is God.
