OPINION: Work together to rid Port Shepstone CBD of crime

"I am just a student who is thinking about the future of our town."

I am so disappointed with what I have been witnessing in Port Shepstone CBD, our town has become a danger zone.

We fear going to town because of the street kids that are in all corners of Port Shepstone. Each day our mothers, fathers and colleagues are being mugged of their hard earned money, cellphones and food.

It is such a disappointment that our local police station is not doing anything about the matter, I have been phoning since March complaining about our safety, but nothing is being done.

I was mugged two weeks ago, right next to Home Affairs as I wanted to do my ID. My belongings were taken by the street kids.

I call on all business owners of the Port Shepstone CBD, security companies, taxi drivers, chiefs of neighbouring areas and local business forums to work together and fight crime out of our town.

Enough is enough now, let’s work together and remove street kids out of our small town and illegal sale of drugs. It is clear that the police service is failing to protect the community and its people.

Let’s work together and defeat the common enemy here. The businesses in town need us to come and purchase from them, we also need them. But is it worth risking our lives daily, going to town not knowing whether you will come back alive, stabbed or dead?

To sum up, I still call on the business owners, forums, taxi drivers and chiefs to work together and defeat crime in our beautiful town.

I am just a student who is thinking about the future of our town….
