OPINION: Margate – gem of the South Coast

The coastal town of Margate has always been the main centre of attraction for locals and holidaymakers. Miles of golden beaches, the warm Indian Ocean, activities for young and old, this is undoubtedly the perfect destination for all. Various top class restaurants and holiday resorts adds to the ambience.

All the swimming beaches are currently open for swimming, and get tested regularly by the authorities for any inconsistencies. We have had a good holiday season despite all the challenges faced globally by all. Lazy days can be spent at ease on our beaches, our local SAPS and RNM Law Enforcement together with our local security companies have created a very safe overall experience for all.

All stakeholders and roleplayers have joined hands to ensure Margate grows, remains safe, and is clean and tidy. Locals are proud to call this town their own, against the backdrop of moving here from bigger cities that crowded and dampened the lifestyle and security of so many. We experience comments and praise daily from all visitors regarding the safe and friendly experience they have in Margate, compared to their home towns, where they have huge challenges daily. The visible difference that the combined effort of all the roleplayers has made, is being noticed.

Looking at the bleak picture the outside world is finding itself in, it is absolutely worth the time and effort to visit Margate now. Affordable holiday accommodation, great food, lovely weather, friendly locals – all adds to the recipe of success. Margate has had no water interference problems for a few months now, and all local businesses and residents have a good consistent water supply from the local Ugu municipality.

As with the rest of the world, some establishments and residents have made provision for storing additional water supplies, should the need arise, but there is absolute nothing wrong with our level of service delivery in this part of our paradise.
As the rest of the country, and now different parts of the world, is facing challenges in electricity supplies, we of course have loadshedding. Our local business owners, restaurants, holiday establishments, shopping centres have made provision for the interruptions of Eskom, and the minute the power goes off, the generators kick in, without any inconvenience to guests.

While sitting on your balcony or deck, sipping your favourite cocktail, watching the whales and dolphins frolic in the waves… this is true bliss. Spending days on the beaches with your family, enjoying the sunny weather and exploring the abundance of amenities within less than a hour’s drive, certainly also ensures there is not a boring minute on holiday.

We have famous landmarks like the smallest desert in the world at Port Edward, hiking trials amidst tropical forestry at the backdrop of Oribi Gorge Nature Reserve with waterfalls, spectacular scenery of the gorge’s cliffs, abundance of bird life, wildlife, picnic spots – these all attract tourists from all over the world.

Game viewing at Lake Eland, great fishing with well-maintained fishing piers, as well as the great sardine run phenomenon during winter months.

Most locals have deep roots on the South Coast, and still stay here after growing up here as children because they realise the true value of the environment.
A positive outlook and in-depth knowledge of the area and dynamics involved, ensures that the locals are a healthy, caring community. We welcome all, keen on sharing this jewel with the world.
