OPINION: Daily weather map frustrations
The maps produced by the weather services are acceptable as they provide information but are far from being works of art.
I wish to pass comment on the quality of diagrammatic presentation of the daily weather report as displayed on our TV screens.
I am a qualified cartographer, and thus pick up very quickly on whether a map is satisfying the need for which it has been produced.
Map books were the source of my scrutiny before we were able to access digital maps on the ever-present cellphone. The maps produced by the weather services are acceptable as they provide information but are far from being works of art.
They are are purely functional, however, even functional maps need to do the job properly. I find it most odd that the capital of Namibia is annotated along with the town of Luderitz, yet Botswana does not receive the same courtesy.
Unless you have travelled around the scenic southern region of that country, you would never have heard of Hukuntsi. This is a nature park, off the road between Lobatse and Ghanzi, yet it appears on the map. What about Gaborone? This town is, after all, the capital of Botswana and as such surely deserves to be shown on the map. Please apply your mind to this oddity and remove Hukuntsi in favour of Gaborone.
Something else that I wonder about, for the sake of order, why not present the provinces in alphabetical order (instead of the seemingly aimless sequence) and then list the town alphabetically as well? This to me would indicate that there is a plan behind the scenes and somebody knows what’s going on.
