As we South Africans do know, the dreaded and annually anticipated road carnage season is looming. Each and every Christmas holiday season sees promises of improved road surveillance by road traffic authorities.
There are big displays of road blocks and of errant motorists being arrested and/or given traffic fines. Looks all good in the run up but when the fatalities are counted it is obvious that the intentional reduction in deaths on the road was not achieved.
The gist of my letter is to point out that although it is proven fact that alcohol consumption contributes to the road accident numbers, why does alcohol get promoted with much fanfare on the television channels, yet the advertising of tobacco products is banned?
Which causes more damage to us South Africans? Granted nicotine can lead to lung cancer and related illnesses and later death, at least smoking a pack of cigarettes does not make one become a foolish person who can possibly take someone’s life on the road or in an altercation. Seems like double standards to me!
