OPINION: Cloud-cover creates cool conditions

Long-time residents of Scottburgh have commented on how cool November has been.

Statistics have confirmed this assumption, although November 2020 was in fact cooler, as was 2014. The maximum temperature for 2020 was 26 degrees with the minimum being only 19 degrees, while 2014 recorded 21 and 17 degrees.
However, November 2021 and 2019 were much hotter months (max 26 and 29). In contrast, the maximum and minimum temperatures this past November were 23 maximum and 18 minimum. While the weather was in fact only marginally cooler in November (and October), the constant cloud-cover over the South Coast during these months created much cooler conditions.

The rainfall recorded in Scottburgh during November was as follows: 2nd – 3,5mm; 4th – 32mm; 8th – 8mm; 9th – 1,5mm; 10th – 11mm; 13th – 2mm; 15th – 1mm; 16th – 10mm; 19th – 9mm; 24th – 5mm; 26th – 33mm; 27th -11mm. The total rainfall for the month was 127mm, generally lower than in the past, despite the near constant cloudy conditions.

Year-by-year rainfall comparisons for November: 2021 – 173mm; 2020 – 228mm; 2019 – 166mm; 2018 – 52mm; 2017 – 182mm. Other than a drier month in 2018, rainfall during this past November was lower than in previous years.
