BRONWYN TANNER: Tuning in – Survivors celebratory party held at hospital

“Children turned out beautifully dressed accompanied by their minders for their celebration party at GJ Crookes Hospital last Friday. Survivors aged under a year to 19 years arrived quietly, but departed exuberantly. Significant dignitaries were present holding their seats for the duration – a true mark of respect to the young heroes and heroines. They included hospital management as well as district and regional directors who spoke encouragingly to the victims. Included in talks was information of the various markers relating to gender-based violence (GBV) and how it is in each person’s ambit to take responsibility and halt it.
Speeches were also delivered by a 25-year-old survivor of sexual assault whose health was then impacted by HIV. The Saps were represented in casual clothes providing information on steps to be taken for prevention and management of assault. A third testimony from an activist told of his efforts to stop the current increasing wave of GBV. No-one went home hungry or without a gift in hand. Along with generous individuals and groups various sponsors made the day memorable.
The Pennington-based community group ‘Sisters of Hope’ (Osisibathemba) supported the Crisis Centre staff and provided comfort packs for each victim during 2022. In addition, Osisibathemba ladies happily worked throughout the event with the centre’s personnel. In recognition of these diligent efforts, GJ Crookes Hospital issued a certificate of recognition to the Sisters of Hope.
The festivities took place in the parking lot at GJ Crookes Hospital where colouring-in, hopscotch, quizzes and other games were played along with much dancing. The vibe beat rhythmically from the start to the final notes of the ever hope-filled ‘Jerusalema’. What was most notable was that these (mostly) female U20s arrived unassumingly and departed full of confidence. In other news, a group of Pennington community members held a Christmas tea for the Elders Voice residents last Thursday. This was an idea started by Engela Wehr and it simply took off. We received some wonderful donations and sponsorship. Ladies, some with the help of their husbands decorated tables, provided eats and hosted their guests. It was a lovely morning full of cheer and good spirits.
Those in frail care, who could not attend the tea, were not forgotten and received their gift parcels and eats. A massive thanks to all sponsors and hosts.
Don’t forget the Selborne Christmas market on Saturday, December 17 from 10:00 onwards with over 40 stalls and live music from 14:00.
