OPINION: Lots of rain despite heatwave

The total rainfall for January was 144,5mm.

Readers will be surprised to learn what the statistics tell us about the rainfall that fell in Scottburgh during January.

Despite the intolerable heatwave and exceptionally dry conditions we experienced in the middle of the month, this past month was in fact the wettest January this past decade. In contrast, last year was one of the driest in years.

The average rainfall in Scottburgh for January is 86,8mm, but this past month 144,5mm of rain fell in the town despite the heatwave. The wet weather we experienced over Christmas spilled over into the first weeks of the new year, as the rainfall figures below indicate, until the heatwave commenced mid-month.

The rainfall for Scottburgh in January was as follows: 5th – 60mm; 6th – 30mm; 19th – 1mm (when the heatwave hit); 25th – 22mm; 28th – 11mm; 29th – 0,5mm; 30th – 20mm. Total for January: 144,5mm.
The rainfall for January over the last five years was: 2022 – 55mm; 2021 – 122,5mm; 2020 – 54mm; 2019 – 85,5mm; 2018 – 74mm.
