Reviving paradise: Blowing smoke and making waves

Smoke J Lawrence performance on the 16th will be part of a national album launch – his other gigs on the South Coast during December will be at Rocky Ridge and Douglas Mitchell – and is guaranteed to knock your socks off.

It’s been a busy year for The Green Net, where every day brings new information and learning, engagement with more and more members of our community, and opportunities to appreciate the beauty and resilience of the South Coast.

We’ve been busy bees, attending lots of meetings, running community projects, engaging with community groups and the authorities, planting gardens and building ecobrick benches… and our 2025 calendar is nearly ready! It’s time to let our hair down and enjoy what makes the South Coast such a special place – great music under the trees, lovely people and relaxed, peaceful vibes.

We’re ending off 2024 with our first official fundraiser, a fabulous day of music and fun at the eco-friendly Waves venue (music.motion.ocean) in Umzumbe on Monday, December 16 (Day of Reconciliation). The highlight of the day will be blues legend Smoke J Lawrence with the Blues Train.

His performance will be part of a national album launch – his other gigs on the South Coast during December will be at Rocky Ridge and Douglas Mitchell – and is guaranteed to knock your socks off.

Smoke was born in Nqabeni – 55km from Port Shepstone. Ten years ago, a fire destroyed his recycling business in Ravine Lane, Marburg, and the family had to make some tough choices and relocate to Johannesburg. It is truly wonderful to be celebrating his return in this wonderful way.

Smoke is not only a great musician, but with the creation of The Smoke Train Blues Movement SA, he invites local blues artists from countries where he’s performed to visit and acts as an ambassador – showing his passion for cultural exchange and respect for different traditions.

The day begins at 10:00, with a host of local musos in the house. The Smoke show will begin around 14:00. Local art, clothing, craft and delicious food will be on offer – the venue is not licenced, so please BYOB.

If you would like to book a stall, contact Clare on 078 6484763. Tickets cost R150 and are available online from Quicket and include a 20% discount towards a calendar purchase.

The Green Net will be showcasing its plans and projects, and answering any environmental questions you may have, and promoting our beautiful new 2025 KZN Biodiversity calendars.
