No! I’m not referring to the natural environment; I’m talking about your work environment.
If you have ever worked for a company that offered no growth and opportunity, or if you were part of an industry that was not aligned with your own goals and dreams, then you are familiar with that bitter feeling that arises in you when you are in the wrong environment; surrounded by the wrong people.
The most obvious reason why you would stay in a space like this would be because you have bills to pay. You are not alone, but at some point, your dreams need to be achieved.
If you are working towards a career goal, you would need to be involved in the correct work environment among people who were once in your shoes.
If you are not, your dream of becoming what you want to be will vanish because as much as a university degree matters, it will never beat actual work experience.
In order to do a particular task, you would need to learn it and practice it, but how do you do this if you are around individuals who are unwilling to help?
How would you make an effort to gain the necessary experience if you are in an environment that is not contributing to your growth?
What happens when you know what you want to become but you are not in that industry, or you are trying to find better opportunities, but your current job is killing you on the inside?
This happened to me at a local company I used to work for, which manufactured and distributed electrical products.
This was an environment that offered no growth because management was, well, let’s just say, more subjective than objective, and finding better opportunities was tough because I didn’t have any relevant experience.
Though there was a lot to learn – stock control, receiving stock, admin, and much more – no training was provided, and probably would never have been.
I could have learnt if I was taught; anyone could have learnt.
Unfortunately, I was around individuals (management especially) who were unhelpful and unfair. This environment soon began to destroy my mindset.
Besides those famous bills that scream your name every day, why would you remain in a workspace like this?
Why would you stick with that job you hate so much?
If this reason is in your mind now, would you admit it?
It’s something that makes you lose sight of your goal and becomes your biggest distraction. Comfortableness! You become comfortable in that soul-destroying environment, doing a job that isn’t going to help you progress in life.
Knowing when to quit is imperative.
Sadly, this is easier said than done, as one side of you wants to quit to fulfil your dreams and the other needs to stay back to earn that salary.
When your time does come, and you are working towards achieving your goal, make sure you are in a productive environment, among helpful co-workers and under supportive management who will assist you in doing this.
