OPINION: DA condemns wasteful expenditure

The author says, "Put the needs of the people of Umdoni first."

The DA Caucus in Umdoni Municipality is outraged by the decision to host the recently held Policy Workshop in Port Edward – a location outside the municipality – despite several suitable and cost-effective venues being available in Umdoni.

This decision, taken amid worsening service delivery challenges in many wards, represents a gross mismanagement of public funds. Communities continue to suffer from pothole-ridden roads, uncollected refuse, and unresolved housing issues, yet the municipality is willing to spend scarce resources on luxury out-of-town workshops.

The DA Caucus formally raised this issue with the municipal manager via official correspondence urging that the workshop be relocated to a local venue to demonstrate financial responsibility and respect for our ratepayers. Disappointingly, there was no response.

The lack of accountability and responsiveness underscores a growing culture of indifference towards prudent governance and the real needs of our residents. Furthermore, a document was provided minutes before the presentation, eliminating our ability to prepare and make meaningful contributions during the workshop.

The DA remains committed to fighting for transparency, service delivery, and the responsible use of municipal resources. We call on the mayor and acting municipal manager to do the right thing – put the needs of the people of Umdoni first, and to implement cost containment measures and stop this wasteful expenditure.
