OPINION: ‘I was blind but now I can see’
We don't thank these health workers enough and I want to encourage them to do above and beyond what's expected.

These are the words (in the headline) spoken by my eldest sister, Maggie K Ngcobo, after she had a successful eye operation at Port Shepstone Regional Hospital on July 18.
In mid March we went to Turton Community Health Centre where we met a friendly young optometrist Ntokozo Memela, who enquired about my sister’s situation with her eyes and deteriorating eyesight.
I duly informed her that my sister had been going for help at one of the government hospitals in KZN, but that, unfortunately, it had dragged on until now.
Ntokozo performed some tests before referring my sister to Port Shepstone Regional Hospital on June 27.
The hospital’s eye clinic, under the leadership of Dr N Salagooa, also performed tests and gave her medication to treat her eyes.
They told us to come back on July 17, which we did.
After a few checks, they requested that my sister come back the following day, whereupon they performed an eye operation.
The next day I went back to the hospital – and I could not believe my eyes when I saw that my sister was reading!
From the bottom of my heart, I want to convey my sincere gratitude, on behalf of family and friends, to Ntokozo at Turton clinic and Dr Salagooa and her dedicated and friendly staff.
We don’t thank these health workers enough and I want to encourage them to do above and beyond what’s expected.
Thank you, once again. Isambane esamba umgodi sawulala.
