Police warn against damaging infrastructure
Vandalism or damage to roads, theft of cables and copper taps, or tampering with electricity and water supply are criminal offences.
Deliberate damage to infrastructure is a crime, according to Port Shepstone police.
Police spokesperson, Captain Petros Mpinge, said police will not hesitate to arrest and prosecute people in terms of the Criminal Matters Amendment Act 18 of 2015, more so those who deliberately damage or steal infrastructure.
Mpinge said vandalism or damage to roads, theft of cables and copper taps, or tampering with electricity and water supply are criminal offences.
“Persons have been successfully prosecuted for theft of cellphone tower batteries and cables. Second-hand dealers and or scrap metal dealers are cautioned against purchasing questionable copper piping or wire thereby ending the market and trade of these goods. The public is encouraged to report all acts of theft to essential infrastructure to the authorities and not to engage in such acts of criminality,” said Mpinge.
