Izingolweni acting principal killed

Sadtu has organised a memorial service for Ngcobo at St Peters Church, Ezingolweni this Thursday from 12:00.

Mthunzi Ngcobo, the acting principal of Mshiywa Primary School (which falls under the Ezingolweni Circuit) was gunned down in Nkulu, KwaNyuswa on Thursday night last week.

Ngcobo was shot dead, along with another man, who was one of the school’s governing body members, but is yet to be identified.

KwaZulu-Natal police spokesman, Lieutenant-Colonel Nqobile Gwala confirmed the incident, said the motive for the killing was unknown at this stage.

Charges of murder have been opened at Ezinqoleni police station for investigation.

The provincial secretary of the South African Democratic Teachers’ Union (Sadtu) in KwaZulu-Natal, Nomarashiya Caluza, said the union condemns the barbaric act of criminality that continues to rob society of good and noble leaders and teachers like Ngcobo.

Caluza said the continued slaughter of teachers by criminals, who happen to be members of the same society teachers are committed to teaching, is in its own, retrogressing and reversing the progress they have made in their quest to deliver public quality education.

She added Sadtu is deeply saddened and shocked by Ngcobo’s untimely death.

At the time of his death he was also the branch secretary of Zakhele Cele in Mbuso Shabalala region, under Ugu District.

He has been a member of the regional executive committee of Mbuso Shabalala region since 2015.

He was also a member of the community policing forum in his home town.

Caluza said the Sadtu, while sending condolences to the families and school, urged law enforcement agencies to work tirelessly until they arrest the criminals who did this.

“Members of the community who may have information regarding the perpetrators behind these inhumane acts are urged to report this to the police,” she said.

KZN Department of Education spokesperson, Sihle Mlotshwa, also expressed condolences to the families, friends and colleagues of the two murdered men.
