Trio arrested for unlicenced guns

Police spokesperson Captain Adam Francis said a scrapyard was robbed in Park Rynie on October 24 and information received by Saps members of Umzinto K9, Scottburgh Sub-Cluster Team and Scottburgh Detective Service led them to an informal settlement where an arrest was made.

A 23-year-old man was recently arrested by Umzinto Saps for possession of an unlicenced firearm and ammunition.

Police spokesperson Captain Adam Francis said a scrapyard was robbed in Park Rynie on October 24. Information received led Saps members of Umzinto K9, Scottburgh Sub-Cluster Team and Scottburgh Detective Service to an informal settlement where the man was arrested.

Francis said he was searched by members and a gas gun and clothing fitting the description during the commission of the crime was recovered.

He added that further information led the members to a nearby residence where a second man, also aged 23, was arrested.

“Both were charged for possession of an unlicenced firearm and ammunition. They appeared in the Scottburgh Magistrate’s Court and remain in police custody until their next court appearance on January 8, 2024. Umzinto K9 under the command of Captain Devandree Ellis is determined to eradicate criminal elements in the Umzinto policing area and beyond. The members rely heavily on their canine companions as they persistently close the net on lawbreakers and are ready to assist other units throughout the district,” he said.

He added that further information led the team to Umlazi Q Section where a third man, aged 39, was arrested and found to be in possession of a fully loaded Glock, a homemade firearm and shotgun rounds.
Francis added the recovery and subsequent arrest were possible due to the further assistance of Umlazi Detective Service, Metro Trio Crimes and ET Security and Rapid Response.

“All three were charged for possession of an unlicenced firearm and possession of unlicensed ammunition respectively. Preliminary investigations have revealed that the men are also sought in a number of other cases,” he said.

Ugu District VISPOL Commander, Brigadier Anton Kapp applauded the combined efforts of the team in following up information and making the arrests.
He further added that the Saps K9 units are crucial to the optimal functioning of the district and ensuring public safety.
