Men in court on charges of stock theft
The suspects were found in the act of washing vehicles which were believed to have been used in the commission of the stock theft.
Seven men, believed to be members of a syndicate terrorising stock owners in the Ugu and Harry Gwala districts, were arrested for stock theft in Sawoti (Umdoni municipality) recently.
Police spokesperson Captain Adam Francis said Saps members were manning a vehicle checkpoint on the R612 road in Sawoti when they spotted a suspicious vehicle which was stopped.
Francis said upon searching the vehicle police recovered three carcasses of cattle, saying that two men were duly arrested.
Further investigations led the investigating team to J-Section in Umlazi, where five more men were nabbed in possession of three more carcasses.
He said the men were found washing vehicles which were believed to have been used in the commission of the stock theft.
“The two men arrested in Sawoti appeared in court on Wednesday for possession of suspected stolen cattle and were remanded in custody. Their case was transferred to the Highflats Magistrate’s Court. All five men, between 24 and 34 years old, have been charged with stock theft and have already been linked with cases in Msinsini and Highflats,” said Francis.
He said the slaughtered cattle were positively identified by the owner, a farmer at Highflats.
