Rural schools benefit from sponsored science labs

NPC recently visited these science labs to check up on their functionality.

Science labs and apparatus are scarce in rural schools, but some schools in KwaNyuswa, Oshabeni and Gamalakhe have benefited from NPC Huaxin’s sponsored science labs and equipment.

The four beneficiary schools are located in traditional leaders’ areas, far away from towns and modern educational facilities.

The NPC’s investment of R1.3m in these schools’ science infrastructure has, according to their principals, transformed learners’ education with benefits seen in their matric results.

NPC Huaxin’s spokesperson, Smangele Tshabalala, said this project forms part of the NPC Simuma quarry’s and Margate quarry’s social and labour plans projects.

“NPC is proud to have made a positive impact, not only in the lives of learners of these schools but thousands of learners who will benefit in future.”

According to Tshabalala, science is a critical subject that more learners need to learn and understand.

“This project aims to improve learner performance in science while ensuring that they have enough exposure to the subject and all the necessary tools for them to pass with good marks. NPC has invested over R1.3m the the four science labs.”

He added all these projects have been completed and that learners are already benefiting to improve their science results. “We have science labs in Duduzile Secondary in Oshabeni, Zuzicebo High in KwaNyuswa, Mgudlwa High in KwaNyuswa and Olwandle High in Gamalakhe.”

Duduzile Secondary’s principal, Smangele Madlala, said the mining company gave them a science lab, classrooms and a borehole.

“The lab will assist our learners and rekindle their love for science. Water supply is unreliable in Oshabeni; sometimes, we were forced to let learners go home early due to lack of water. The borehole will assist us a lot.”

Zuzicebo High’s learners in KwaNyuswa are happy to have a well-equipped science lab.

Zuzicebo High’s principal, Kaizer Mnyandu, said they received a science lab and lab coats. “Since we started using the science lab, our results improved. We thank NPC because some of our learners’ parents are poor. We used to hire transport to take our learners to a science lab at a resource centre in Ezingolweni. NPC also painted our classrooms,” said Mnyandu.

The principal of Olwandle High, Lucky Mantsho, said NPC built boys’ toilets and a science lab. “Our learners are now able to do practicals. This has helped them to improve their results. We want them to pass science with 100%.” said Mantsho.
