MKP members rally to clean hazardous road

Relief was brought to Ward 28 residents after uMkhonto weSizwe Party (MKP) members in Zone 4 embarked on a clean up of a road, between the Gamalakhe Community Health Centre and the Gamalakhe swimming pool.

The overgrown vegetation, potholes and never-ending puddles of water had become a safety hazard.

After the April 2022 floods, a huge sinkhole resulted in the closure of this road. Ongoing heavy rains have caused further damage, which is yet to be fixed.

The road is mostly used by school children, emergency services, and scholar transport vehicles, along with residents of Wards 5 and 28.

MKP’s Siphelele Nzimande said the party’s Ward 28 convenor, Nonhlanhla Madlala, was the brainchild behind the campaign.

He said local MKP leaders backed the initiative and were assisted by the Progressive Civics Congress and other stakeholders.

Ray Nkonyeni Municipality recently said it was aware of the damage to the road and its importantance to the residents of Gamalakhe.

In a statement it said: “It is one of the roads that has been registered as infrastructure damage in one of the disasters in our our municipality. Funds to fix the infrastructure usually comes in tranches from the national or provincial government, but nothing has been received as yet.”

However, Nzimande accused the current government of being lazy and showing no willingness to work.

He said all the government does is make promises.

“They are now tired, hence, the MKP will give them a break, from the next local government elections. We urge Ray Nkonyeni Municipality residents to reach out regarding any challenges they face. These can include issues of service delivery, RDP houses, exploitation in the workplace, or any other matter,” he said.

He added that all the work they do is voluntary, saying that they are not sponsored as the MKP or PCC.
