Neglect at cemetery upsets Mtwalume family

Tombstones at nine graves have either fallen over, or intentionally knocked down.

The Deyi family of Mtwalume has lambasted local municipal authorities for the shocking state of Albersville Cemetery, where a number of graves have been vandalised.

Also, no security personnel is present.

Nelisiwe Deyi said she was shocked at the mess at the gravesite of her loved one. “My family member Lindiwe is buried here. I live in Mtwalume and I don’t visit her grave often, but I visited last week and found it in a terrible condition. It looks like no one cares about the cemetery, the buildings are also dilapidated.”

“Tombstones at nine graves have fallen over. It looks like they were intentionally knocked down and piled over the graves. Some graves have been dug up and left with gaping holes. It’s a shocking state of affairs and someone needs to do something about it,” said Deyi.

She added that it hurt to find that Lindiwe’s grave had been vandalised. “The site looks abandoned by the authorities. The families of the deceased need to visit to see if the graves of their relatives are still in good condition.”

A dilapidated building.

Ray Nkonyeni Municipality’s spokesperson, Simon April, said that the section responsible for cemeteries is coordinating a joint site inspection.

“As an immediate plan of action, the section will be embarking on the campaign of cleaning the gravesites, including the Albersville one. Other matters will be the subject of a joint site inspection to find a lasting solution to the problem,” said April.
