Dialogue focuses on youth

The dialogue aimed to disseminate key information to assist youths seeking assistance to fight the challenges they face on a daily basis.

Gender-based violence, mental health and substance abuse are youth problems that need the collaboration of all stakeholders. This was one of the views that emerged at a dialogue coordinated by the KZN Premier’s Office at Mojo Community Hall in Boboyi last Friday.

One of the youth in attendance, Thankeka Ngobese, said traditional councils, parents, schools, government departments, youth organisations, church leaders and NGOS – all need to work together to guide youths to rescue them from drug abuse, gender-based violence, mental health issues, crime and other social ills.

Xolani Maphasa of the Department of Social Development encourages youths to visit Tolomane Mnyayiza Skills Development Centre for training in sewing, plumbing, cooking and other disciplines.

“Today’s youths contend with these issues on a daily basis and hold back their development efforts, delaying them from participating in economic opportunities.”

Ndabenhle Sibiya from the Premier’s Office said: “There are government interventions, through different sector departments, which run key programmes which are offered to young people.”

According to Myeza people have lost their identities and do not know who they are in terms of their culture and upbringing and have adopted tendencies that lead them astray.

“The community of Boboyi is a combination of tribes from various areas. Some landed here after 1994, before that there were few people here. It’s a place with too many cohabiting spouses. We need rebuilding of leadership structures and reconciliation, since there was violence before 1994,” said Myeza.

Ndabenhle Myeza of the KZN Premier’s Office and social worker Gugu Biyela engage with the youths.
