Virtual reality technology a game-changer in the classroom

Principal Thoko Nqoko said the technology will mostly assist Maths and Physical Science learners.

Merlewood Secondary received a virtual reality (VR) technology donation from Ulink, Durban Preparatory High and NPC, which was successfully co-ordinated by the non-profit organisation, Walking the Talk Foundation recently.

The foundation’s director and founder, Dale van Blerk, said learners, teachers, parents and Department of Education officials welcomed the handover of a cutting-edge 8-Set Class VR technology, including software and training, all valued at R100 000.

“The ground-breaking technology is a game-changer in education, which will benefit Maths and Physical Science learners. The generous contribution was made possible through the collaboration of Ulink’s Brett Nell, Durban Preparatory High’s Ross Bedford and NPC’s Raheema Accob. The initiative aims to introduce virtual reality learning in classrooms, enhancing both teaching and learner engagement through immersive and interactive experiences,” said Van Blerk.

The school’s IT teacher, Mfanafuthi Ngwabe, said the VR set will open new doors for learners to explore subjects in an interactive and exciting way.

According to Van Blerk, the foundation manages impactful projects on behalf of corporations and technology suppliers.

“Each initiative receives maximum exposure while also guaranteeing that the donated technology is utilised to its greatest potential in the school environment. This partnership highlights the power of collaboration between education, corporate sponsors and non-profit organisations, proving that when communities come together, meaningful change is not only possible, but sustainable.”

Principal Thoko Nqoko said the technology will mostly assist Maths and Physical Science learners.

“It’s not enough because we are a big school, it’s like a drop in the ocean, but it will help learners from Grade 10. We thank our sponsors, may God bless them.”
