Youngsters outplay ballies in thunee knock-out at Wild Coast Sun
Some 200 players took part, and awesome prize money was up for grabs.
One hundred teams took part in the thunee tournament at the Wild Coast Sun Hotel and Casino Resort at the weekend.
In the nail-biting final, it was the battle of the brothers, Emilio Daniel Naidoo and Fabian Paul Naidoo from Durban against Desh Parthad and Haren Parthad from Phoenix. The Naidoo brothers’ strong composure resulted in a 2-1 win and they bagged the first prize of R30 000.

The Parthads took second spot with R12 000. Third place went to Kyle Reddy and Brandon Govender from Richards Bay who won R8 000, and Anthony Perumal and Kevin Moodley, also from Richards Bay, won R4 000 in fourth place.
Visiting teams showed that they are on top of their game, with no locals qualifying for the finals.

Organiser Anandh Perumall said visiting teams claimed the top prize in the hotly contested competition. “Some 200 players took part in the tournament which attracted many new players. It was a huge success and teams came from Johannesburg and Richards Bay. It’s no doubt the competition has grown and become popular, and was supported by both men and women.”

The next competition will probably be held in June 2026.

* Thunee is a popular trick-taking card game that originated in Durban, from the Tamil word for ‘water’. It’s played with four players, with a 24-card deck which includes (9, 10 Jack, Queen, King and Ace) and four scoring cards called ‘ball cards’. The objective is to be the first team to score 12 ‘balls’ (points) by winning rounds.
