Sprint Series thrills fans at Dezzi Raceway in Oslo Beach

The first round of the 2026 series will take place on March 7.

The KZN Road Racing Club’s Super Sprint Series concluded at Dezzi Raceway last Saturday, with competitive racing action thrilling local motorsport enthusiasts.

Petrol heads from around the province flocked to the scenic track near Oslo Beach to watch the various classes compete. Competitors were at the track early to get through qualifying, and the races got underway on time despite a howling wind and less than ideal conditions.

The throaty Backdraft V8 Cobras were a crowd favourite while the Historics highlighted some iconic old cars, rebuilt and reborn. There were also Modifieds, Super GT and sports cars, while production, Mini GP, Motard and Formula Extreme bikes meant there was something for everyone.

The Super GT/Sports car A division was dominated by Jan van der Merwe with Denver Branders second. Ryan Matchett pipped Brent Schroder in the B division.

Rory Nossiter drove his Mini Clubman to victory in Class E of the Historics, with Samuel Hamilton triumphant in Class F in his Mercedes 280E. Shea Sutton took Class G and Peter Young (Ford Escort Mk1) won Class H.

In the Modifieds class A, Nicole Lombard in her VW Scirocco emerged victorious with Ronald van Rensburg (Golf) second. Ethan Fuchs (VW Golf Mk1) beat Gary Commins (VW Golf 1) to the B-class win.

On two wheels, Sandile Mthembu (Honda CBR 1000) edged out Sanjiv Singh on a Kawasaki ZX6R in Formula Extreme. Haydn Nadauld was victorious in the Super Motards: Masters, while Ryan Matchett on a KTM450 just edged out Rory van der Walt in the Super Motards: non masters. Keaton de Jager was untouchable in the Super Production Bikes on a KTM.

The grand finale was the Backdraft one-hour endurance race. Rain began falling at the start, making conditions tricky and slippery for the 31 cars that took to the grid. Fikile Holomisa in his Backdraft Roadstar was unbeatable, taking the chequered flag with Willem Bleeker (VW Polo GTi) second and Ryan Matchett (Backdraft Roadstar) taking the final podium place.

KZN Road Racing Club (KZNRRC) PRO Trevor Warmback said the day was a great success despite the inclement weather, which he admitted probably scared some fans off.

“Overall it was very good,” he confirmed. “There were lots of thrills and spills and a lot of new competitors, too.”

The day brought the curtain down on the 2025 KZNRRC championships. The first round of the 2026 series will take place on March 7, next year, again at Dezzi Raceway.
