Sweet support for diabetes day at Wild Coast Sun
Personal stories were shared on the day.
The second annual Sweet Support Day of Awareness and Community Connection was held at the Wild Coast Sun recently.
Sweet Support is an NGO dedicated to raising awareness of and providing support for individuals with Type 1 and Type 2 diabetes.
The event included a challenging 10km run and a more gentle 5km walk, plus aerobics classes and a health exhibition.
The gathering served as a vital platform for celebrating and supporting the entire diabetes community.
It brought together health professionals, wellness advocates and community members for an informative and uplifting two-day programme.
Organiser Xoliswa Venn of Shelly Beach said she had been inspired to begin this initiative when her daughter, Talia, was diagnosed with Type 1 diabetes at only eight years old.

“We felt that there was so many other people who were suffering with diabetes, in isolation, and that this is just a reminder that you are never alone. November is diabetes awareness month, so there is no better time,” she said.
Those who took part joined in for aerobics sessions, while enjoying live music, and exploring interactive exhibits promoting diabetes awareness and healthy living.
Talks were presented by doctors (Dr Gagiano and Dr Fumba) which provided valuable insights into the management of Type 1 and Type 2 diabetes.
There were also presentations from the Sweet Support Foundation and the Type 1 diabetes ambassador, highlighting personal stories of resilience.
“Our mission extends beyond a single event. We are calling on the government to take immediate action: we urge them to officially declare diabetes a disability that requires urgent national attention,” said Xoliswa.
“We must achieve tighter regulation of public health information and food labelling to ensure consumers are informed and empowered, helping to prevent unnecessary complications and tragic deaths within our community,” she added.
On the second day of the programme, exhibitors showcased the latest in insulin pumps, glucose monitors and wellness tools.
The programme also featured book signings, nutrition sessions and entertainment from Trevor Henning and DJ Justin Swart.
In closing, Edmond Venn said the intention was to empower individuals to live healthier, more informed lives.
