KZN Premier Thami Ntuli is a worried man. This after he learnt about shocking crime incidents in KwaMadlala Location and other areas within the jurisdiction of Ray Nkonyeni Municipality (RNM) at a crime fighting imbizo at JB Sports Ground on Sunday.
Despite the terrible weather, villagers came out in their numbers, to hear what Ntuli and other senior government and traditional leaders had to say, to fight or minimise crime in their areas.

Acting Ugu District Police Commander, Brigadier Anton Kapp said most crimes being attended to are contact crimes.

Ntuli learnt through Inkosi Ngamizizwe Madlala and Ugu District Acting Police Commander, Brigadier Anton Kapp that crime is high in the area.
Firstly, it was Madlala who bemoaned the high crime rate, with most of the incidents being shootings and murder, with few arrests and no convictions, even if arrests were made.

Inkosi Ngamizizwe Madlala says crime is escalating in KwaMadlala Location.

He mentioned several incidents including that of his brother, Prince Vulingqondo Madlala, who was shot and killed with his uncle near Umzumbe River more than three years ago.
He added: “My brother and my uncle were shot in the vehicle by six men wearing suits. What amazes us is that until today, we have heard nothing about any arrests, even though the culprits’ cellphone was left at the scene.”

Ray Nkonyeni Municipality Speaker, Phumlani ‘Mapu’ Gumbi with IFP Deputy Chief Whip in the National Assembly, Busi Machi.

Furthermore, Madlala said out of 12 incidents in the area, eight involved women from Sdakwa section. “In two of the incidents, Induna Stefan Mzobe was murdered in his home and a Mdlangaswa High school teacher was attacked and shot at.”
According to Kapp, RNM contributes 67% of the crime in the region. “The cases that we encounter in the community are contact crimes such as assault, common assault and rape. In the last financial year, we had 7 300 reported cases. Out of these, we made 3 900 arrests, still more cases are being reported,” said Kapp.
Ntuli said everyone needs to play a role in curbing crime and that they are working with CPFs in all areas.
