Up-and-coming Shelly Beach boxer aims to inspire

Kimaya Govender sees the sport as an art form.

From being a keen high jumper in school to participating in equestrian competitions, sport has always been a big part of Kimaya Govender’s life.
The 23-year-old grew up in Bela-Bela in Limpopo and moved to Shelly Beach in 2017. She matriculated from Port Shepstone Secondary in 2020, and at the age of 19, was drawn to boxing after initially attending mixed martial arts classes.
She fell in love with the discipline, fitness and mental strength that boxing demands. Her biggest motivation is to inspire other women to break stereotypes, and that they belong in the ring as much as anyone else.

“When I tell people that I am a boxer, most are surprised. At first, my family was concerned as it’s tough and a combative sport, but they have become my biggest cheerleaders.”
Kimaya trains at The Box Boxing Club in Shelly Beach under owner and coach Andre Jacobs. Her training is a mix of strength, conditioning, bag work, sparring and cardio.
She currently competes in amateur white-collar events and continues to impress with her hard work and natural skills. Next year, the club aims to prepare her for registered amateur competitions.
“With her determination and ability, Kimaya is on a strong path towards achieving gold and we are proud to support her every step of the way,” said Andre.

According to Kimaya, from day one, Andre saw her determination and pushed her. “His coaching goes beyond just teaching techniques such as footwork, defence and powerful combinations. He emphasises discipline, respect and mental strength to succeed both inside and outside the ring.”
Her favourite combo to throw is a jab to the head, cross to the body and then a hook to the head. She recently found out that she loves the check hook, either in a match or while sparring.
“As much as boxing is a sport, I see it as an art form, from head movements to footwork, to throwing combinations; its all about creating a spectacular performance in the ring. My favourite boxer is Clarissa Shields, I love her energy and attitude.”
Beyond the ropes, Kimaya is a Blue Diamond ambassador for Autism Awareness and Acceptance.
