Salmaan shines for Snipers in cricket-friendly at Port Shepstone Country Club
The match was played in an excellent spirit.
Half century hero Salmaan Moosa starred with the bat and Uzair Patel (four wickets) with the ball as Snipers academy youth team defeated the RC Challengers by 43 runs in a 50 over friendly at Port Shepstone Country Club last Saturday.
Low, slow wickets are supposed to be difficult to bat on, but Salmaan showed otherwise with a helter-skelter inning for the Snipers.
The two academies put out two U15 teams – well, there were a few U16s involved, as well as quite a few U13s and even an U12, but the point of the fixture was to give the boys the opportunity to play a 50 over game.
Snipers batted first and made 178 all out in 35.2 overs. Salmaan batted at number six and finished on 50 not out, striking eight fours.
YY Moolla, who opened the batting, was his usual classy elegance, making 32 before getting out stumped to leg-spinner Marcel van Etteryk.
Reuben de Bruin weighed in with some useful lower order runs, making 14, but importantly, stuck around with Salmaan to put together a 53 run partnership which hurt the Challengers.
Best of the bowlers for Challengers was Reuben Kunz with 3-24 in four overs.
Aphelele Nzimande, who plays for Izingolweni in Division 3 cricket (and is still only 12 years old) took two wickets for 10 runs.
In reply, Challengers never really got going, finding Uzair’s left arm inswingers difficult to handle and getting bowled out for 135 in 36.1 overs.
Top scorer was Daniel Rush who made a gritty 29 and got his team close, but not close enough.
