Protesters demand service delivery in Umzumbe

Ward 15 residents urge the municipal leadership to intervene.

Residents of Ward 15 in Umzumbe Municipality protested outside the municipal offices last Tuesday.

According to the community, service delivery is lacking in the the ward, and the councillor, Jabualani Gumede, is unavailable.

Makhosi Msani of Kwaqoloqolo demanded the municipal leadership intervene.

“We have water issues, bad roads and electricity problems, but we are unable to report it to Gumede. We have people who need help due to health issues, but we cannot ask our councillor for assistance.”

Msani asked if a road needs to be graded who will offer assistance? “Now we need the mayor, deputy mayor and speaker to sort out this issue.”

Buyani Shabane and Makhosi Msani demand intervention from the municipal leadership.

Another resident, Buyani Shabane, said for the past four years there has been no active councillor in the Kwaqoloqolo area (Ward 15).

“We need the municipality to give us someone who will stand in for him (Gumede), so that we can get the service delivery we need.”

As Gumede is not allowed to comment on the issue to the media, the municipal spokesperson, Sabelo Ncwane provided a statement.

Ncwane added that the municipality is aware of the problem that the Ward 15 community is facing.

“It’s untrue that the councillor has never worked or has been available since he was elected. I can confirm the municipality’s leadership is working on a solution.”
