A 19-year-old man, the woman's son, was arrested in connection with the incident.
Thulisile Mkhize (39) of Mabheleni area, near St Faiths was allegedly murdered by her son, Bayanda Mkhize (19), in the Embo area in Umkomaas last Friday.
Mkhize appeared in the Scottburgh Magistrate’s Court on Monday this week, and the case was postponed to February 2. He remains in police custody.
Umkomaas Saps spokesperson Captain Ranjith Rampersad said police responded to a murder scene, where the teenager was allegedly found chopping a body into pieces.
Rampersad said that the body had also sustained multiple injuries. “With the assistance of community members, police were able to arrest the suspect.”
Thulisile’s husband, Mkhanya Mkhize, said his wife received an urgent call from family members asking her to go to Embo because their son seemed troubled.
He said his son had suffered from a mental illness sometime last year, but they had managed to get him help.
“When my wife got there, he attacked her with a bush knife and killed her.”
He added that his son will be taken for mental evaluation and drug tests.
