The body of a man who had sustained gunshot wounds was found in the Nyangwini area in Ward 10, Mtwalume on March 16.
Ugu District police confirmed the incident, and a case of murder was opened at Saps Hibberdene.
“The man, aged about 30, had sustained two gunshot wounds and was confirmed dead by paramedics. His body was taken to the Port Shepstone Mortuary for a post-mortem.”
The man who is unknown was dressed in khaki trousers and a black T-shirt, and had a black backpack.
A community member spotted the body and police were alerted.
Ward councillor Bernard Tryon is shocked at the incident.
“Last month we found the body of a 19 year old boy, now this. It seems like this happened on Sunday night. As ward councillor I have been pleading with young people to stop going out at night, in most cases, you find that people are killed as they return from a night out.”
According to Tryon as the body has not been identified as yet, he calls on people from neighbouring wards to go to Hibberdene police station to check if the person is a relative.
The chairperson of Women of Umzumbe, Bongekile Xaba, said that the incident is appalling, and it happened on the same day as she was about to attend court for another murder case.
“We have had so many cases in Mtwalume of people being murdered. When will it stop?”
Xaba advised if people hear anything suspicious at night, they should call the crime forum or report it to police.
