Academy empowers young surfers

The academy is making a meaningful impact in the lives of many.

The Wave of Hope Surf Academy, a project of Genesis Hope South Africa, is helping young teenagers from local communities develop confidence and life skills through the sport.

The academy currently supports 48 young surfers who attend weekend sessions on a rotating basis.

Beyond learning to surf, they are introduced to discipline, teamwork and perseverance while spending time in a structured and supportive environment.

Many of the surfers have progressed to compete in development competitions across the Ugu District during the surf season, gaining valuable experience and exposure.

Phumelela Mdladla, and coach Senzo Shange, who is also a project leader of Wave of Hope.

One standout is Phumelela Mdladla, who joined the programme at a young age.

She was among the first to compete and reach the finals at the Groms Gama in 2022, held in Durban.

Now in her matric year at Merlewood Secondary, she continues to inspire others through her dedication and progress.

The academy aims to create opportunities for young people while providing a safe and encouraging space where they can grow in confidence and pursue positive goals.

Through sport, mentorship and consistent support, the academy continues to make a meaningful impact in the lives of young people along the South Coast.
