Umzumbe protesters demand municipal services
The protest was a peaceful one, to stress that water is a right, not a privilege.
Members of the National Freedom Party (NFP) Ugu Region marched to Umzumbe Local Municipality against poor service delivery on March 27. They demanded an improvement to road infrastructure, street lights, safer communities, jobs for youth, adequate housing and an end to gender-based violence in the community.
Their peaceful march was directed at Ugu District Municipality asserting that water is a right, not a privilege. The protesters committed to fight for water as they blamed Ugu for failing to provide clean water to all Ugu communities. This protest took place, in the same week, as the another prolonged community water service delivery protest in Oshabeni
NFP Ugu regional co-ordinator Glen Ndubelele said their protest was a peaceful one, to stress that water is a right, not a privilege, and that water is life, so water must be delivered to all communities. “We join the people of Umzumbe and Ugu District as we stand together against poor service delivery. We demand action as we march for reliable water supply.”
Ugu District Municipality director of corporate services, Makhosi Gobhozi, and senior communications manager, Zimbini Mpurwana, received and signed the list of grievances from protesters on behalf of Ugu management and leadership.
Umzumbe municipal manager Shaka Cele also received a list of complaints and promised to relay them to the municipal leadership to consider. “We are just the messengers to receive your complaints and forward them to the municipal leaders,” said Cele.
